01 Aug 2002 - Farfield receive SMART Award for development of higher throughput instrument for protein characterisation

Farfield Sensors are pleased to announce the recent SMART award received from the Department of Trade and Industry. The award, which is for a feasibility study of 12 months duration, is to expand analytical throughput capabilities of Farfield's proprietary dual waveguide interferometer, which is currently used for R&D in protein characterisation.

Managing Director, Dr Gerry Ronan commented, 'We are highly appreciative of the support the DTI have provided. This opportunity will accelerate the extension of Farfield's analytical instrumentation from two channels into a very much higher level of integration. Although protein characterisation is our primary market we are very much aware of the analytical needs of the proteomic community, our technology which enables multiple simultaneous analysis of protein interactions on a tagless platform offers unique benefits for this market.'

Farfield Sensors is a Manchester (UK) based company which has developed a range of instrumentation based on dual waveguide interferometery, a major new platform technology for optically interrogating biomolecular interactions without recourse to labelling. The AnaLight® range of instruments are in use across a number of Life Science laboratories, providing researchers with valuable information in a number of areas. Particular advances have been made in the study of the early stages of protein aggregation in relation to the β-amyloids associated with Alzheimer's disease and the a-synucleins associated with Parkinson's disease.
